BUCE reports a 13-fold boost of exports to UK

05/21/2021

Over 4 months of 2021 exports of Belarusian products to Great Britain via BUCE have grown by 13 times compared to the same period of 2020 and hit 9.4 mln USD.

Sawn timber and wooden stakes accounted for the lion’s share of export sales, or roughly 9 million USD. The remaining 4 hundred thousand came from chrome-tanned leather also known as “wet blue”. Active shipments of wet blue hides to the UK started in March this year.

Based on exports statistics for January-April 2021, the UK has become the fastest growing export market for the Belarusian exporters registered on BUCE. It has even outstripped China, which has been holding this title since the beginning of the year. The situation changed after one of the UK’s biggest timber importers started using BUCE’s trading platform. This enabled the Belarusian sawmills to export their products directly to the British consumers reaping higher profits than they would in the Baltic region. Therefore, BUCE is currently studying the possibility of holding specialized trading sessions aimed specifically at the UK market. The other reason for the surge in commodity exports to Great Britain is the resumption of chrome-tanned leather shipments. One and a half months after the launch of these trades the sum of transactions reached 319 thousand USD, while the first two weeks of May have already provided 290 thousand USD of export sales. We believe that the upward trend will remain in place at least in the short run”, BUCE press service reported.
