ECONOMY

The Republic of Belarus has the economy from the former Soviet Union, but considerably upgraded it lately and explicated according to modern demands.

Large deposits of strategic raw materials - potassium salt (valuable fertilizer for agriculture) exported to many countries of the world.

The main branches of Belarusian economy are engineering industry and metal working, potassium salt extraction, chemical and petrochemical industry, electric power industry, light, food and woodworking industry.

INDUSTRY

METALLURGY

The metallurgical complex includes 8 enterprises. The main products are certificated in many countries of the world and are released under international standards. Main goods are: steel electrowelded circular and shaped tubes, a steel casting, bars, various sorts of strands, metal cords, screw bolts, screw nuts, nails, molding materials, the heating equipment.

ENGINEERING INDUSTRY AND METAL WORKING

The engineering complex includes 139 enterprises of machine-tool industry, automobile industry, agricultural engineering industry, road-building and municipal engineering industry, engineering industry for food and light production, the instrumental production and metallurgy.

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Belarus specializes in production of trucks, autobuses and special vehicles. The trucks of hoisting capacity up to 300 tons are issued. The Minsk motor-works produces more than 300 models and versions of trucks.

MACHINE-TOOL INDUSTRY

Many years this branch of the Belarus economy ensured quantitative and qualitative development of other branches, playing a key role in renovation of the technological equipment. The leader of the branch is the economic group "BelStankoInstrument" consolidating 25 enterprises and organizations: machine-tool constructing and instrumental mills, the factories on production of the universal machining attachments, the forge press and foundry equipment, special design bureau, research and development institute and design-engineering institute.

TRACTOR AND AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRY

The branch includes 80 enterprises with more than 55 thousand employees. They produce tractors, combines, machinery and the equipment for production and rehash of agricultural commodity, and also duplicate parts for repair. The leader of this branch is the Production Association "The Minsk Tractor Plant" producing the tractors with power up to 280 h.p., with synchronized gear box, a hydro volume steering, and a modern hydraulic system. The Plant is one of the seven main tractors exporters in the world.

BUILDING, ROAD AND MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRY

Branch includes more than 10 enterprises that produce machinery, equipment and instruments for house-builders, road-builders and municipal workers automobile hydraulic cranes, container ships, mounting hoists, positioning devices for timber, concrete mixers, painting assembly units, paint-spray guns, diaphragm air engines, pumps and other equipment for construction-painting and decorating.

RADIO ENGINEERING INDUSTRY

Radio engineering industry engages over 60 factories, science and production associations, research institutes and planning and design bureaus. This branch produce over than one third of volume of commodity of the CIS countries. Main items: universal software-hardware complexes, professional and home computers, automated complexes of a various profile, electronic automatic telephone stations, hardware for telecommunication and link, an automobile and power electronics, electronic cash registers, measuring means, domestic electrical engineering, medical equipment, an accessories, etc. The largest enterprises of this branch are Minsk "Horizon" Plant and OJSC "Vityaz" (Vitebsk) exhaust TV receivers of high quality, design and trimmed functions of world level.

ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY

The main items of electronic industry are systems of information science, television and radio engineering, the film and photo equipment, instrument making, industrial electronics, complex home appliances, etc. New formation samples of iatrotechnics are mastered: monitoring and diagnosis gears, hatchers for newborns, the artificial flap of heart. The largest factory of the branch is the Science-Production Enterprise "Integral" - in co-operating with known foreign producers this factory makes about 60% of the world necessities in integrated circuits for watches.

THE OPTICAL-MECHANICAL INDUSTRY

The optical-mechanical industry includes 10 enterprises producing hi-tech goods: optical observant gears, optical lanterns, day-and-night sights, rigs for optical productions, vacuum machinery for coatings on optics, ceramics and metal, compressors for refrigerators, laser medical equipment, completing parts for automotive and tractor industries, consumer goods.
