2012.08.27 | Russia’s Mechel unit to launch coal plant at Elga in September Yakutugol, a subsidiary of Russian metals and mining group Mechel, plans to launch a coal preparation plant at the Elga deposit in the constituent republic of Yakutia in September, Igor Khafizov, director of Yakutugol, said Monday.“In the next month, we are launching a coal preparation plant with a capacity of 3 million tonnes of coal per year,” he said, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Elga coal deposit is one of the world’s largest deposits by reserves, containing over 2.1 billion tonnes of coal. Mechel Mining, a division of Mechel, launched operations at the deposit in August 2011 and produced about 200,000 tonnes of coal last year. By 2015, Mechel plans to reach an annual production capacity of 9 million tonnes. Total investments in the first stage of the deposit’s development are estimated at 33 billion–35 billion rubles.
