2010.08.23 | Medvedev calls for recovery of Chechen agriculture industry Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday called for a recovery of agriculture in the constituent republic of Chechnya, ITAR-TASS reported. “When you and I were flying in the helicopter, I saw that the fields around Grozny looked good but they’re few in number,” he said at a meeting with Ramzan Kadyrov, president of Chechnya. “A full-scale recovery of the agriculture industry is necessary.”Meanwhile, Kadyrov said he believed the 600 million rubles of federal funds allocated for land amelioration in Chechnya were insufficient and asked for additional funds. Chechnya’s economy was devastated by two wars waged between the federal government and local insurgents in 1994–1996 and 1999–2000. Since then, the conflict has subsided to a low-intensity level.
